The Serbian Interior Ministry (MUP) is endeavoring to improve the security of the Serb community in northern Kosovo through cooperation with EULEX This is according to Deputy Director of Serbian Police Branislav Mitrovic, who on Monday reported to the Serbian Parliament Committee for Kosovo-Metohija. Interior Ministry briefs committee on Kosovo Cooperation with EULEX is necessary, as the Serbian police cannot be present in northern Kosovo, the MUP official said. That cooperation is completely useful and open, he said presenting an Interior Ministry report on the security situation in Kosovo. The Serb community is still subjected to pressures in the form of attacks on personal and property safety, property destruction and denial of telecommunications services, Mitrovic said. He also pointed to the presence of organized crime in Kosovo, which overflows to the rest of the region, and noted that the border with Albania is a particular problem as it is almost completely open. Production and trafficking of narcotics in Kosovo and drug trafficking from Africa and Asia towards the European Union is also a problem, he said. Organized crime is not present in northern Kosovo, inhabited mainly by Serbs, but in the southern parts of the province, he said. Mitrovic said he has briefed EULEX of the situation, in order to prevent the sending of mono-ethnic police units to northern Kosovo, which could provoke instability and trouble the Serb community, he said. The Kosovo police, KPS, now comprises about 700 Serbs, he said, noting that their number should be higher in order to protect the Serb community legally.
