European Parliament (EP) is currently preparing a resolution on Serbia which will be the most positive one so far, MEP Hannes Swoboda has announced. He said that Serbia was unambiguously a part of Europe although it still was not a part of the EU. EP prepares resolution on Serbia “We will vote on the resolution in the EP Foreign Policy Committee next week, because it should be on parliament agenda in January. The resolution deals with Serbia’s positive efforts and support to Belgrade on the path toward the EU,” Swoboda told Tanjug news agency. “We in the EP are currently working on the resolution on Serbia which will be the most positive one so far,” the Austrian politician stressed. He repeated that there had been a significant improvement on Serbia’s path toward the EU and as examples stated visa liberalization and recent decision to forward Serbia’s EU candidacy bid to the EC. Swoboda said that decision to lift visa requirements for the citizens of Serbia was the right one, although there was a certain increase in the number of asylum seekers but that those were “certain groups” and pointed out that Serbia was doing its best to solve the problem. The Austrian, who is also an EP Rapporteur for Croatia, points out that he is advocating that Croatia joins the EU as soon as possible not only for its own sake but also for the sake of its neighbors. According to him, Croatia’s EU accession would show its neighbors that there is a feasible option to become a member of the EU. “The fact that Croatian and Serbian Presidents Ivo Josipovic and Boris Tadic often meet, even in places where the war was fought, represents a positive sign and it shows that they are working for a common future,” Swoboda concluded.
