Serbian police (MUP) and army (VS) special units today carried out an exercise at the police training center in Kula, northern Serbia. MUP's top formations: Special Anti-terrorist Unit (SAJ), Counter-Terrorist Unit (PTJ) and Gendarmerie (Zandarmerija) were joined by the Serbian Army (VS) Kobre Special Battalion, members of the French RAID and special police units from Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro and Bulgaria. The policemen and soldiers demonstrated ways to defend persons under their protection attacked with physical force, knives, pistols and other firearms. The exercise was attended by Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac and French Ambassador in Belgrade Jean Francois Terral. Dacic told reporters that Serbia's special police and army units were the country's pride, and that he was fully confident they would be able to handle any security challenge. Sutanovac underscored the importance of joint drills staged by the police and army, stressing that the one in Kula this Thursday was not the first of its kind. Terral noted that as France has experienced terrorist attacks – such as the one in the Paris metro – while its units are deployed in Lebanon and Afghanistan, the exercise was "inspired by the situations in these countries".
