Merkel: G8 Kosovo discussion constructive

According to his proposal, Belgrade and Priština would try to negotiate a better solution for Kosovo within that period. In case the talks proved fruitless , the UN Security Council would then adopt a resolution based on Martti Ahtisaari’s plan.

However, Sarkozy has admitted that G8 states had not “decided positively” on his motion, adding that it met with Russia’s rejection.

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel confirmed after the summit that no headway had been made in consolidating positions regarding Kosovo. She announced a meeting of Contact Group political directors due to take place next week so as to define next steps in the process.

“We do not have much time,” she said, “We must, if possible, reach the solution by means of a consensus. I cannot say how many days or weeks it will take to reach a decision on Kosovo,” Merkel stressed.

“We want the process to unfold in the United Nations. The situation is not simple. It is not about how much time we need to solve it. We could have already decided on it and sent someone to Kosovo beside Ahtisaari, but it would hardly have changed anything. We have to work very seriously, and the discussion we have had during the summit has been very constructive,” Merkel concluded.

EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana stated Friday that no conclusions with respect to the final status of Kosovo were made, adding that the discussion of the issue would continue.

“There are no conclusions on the matter as we speak, but the discussion will continue,” Solana said.

“Kosovo remains EU’s priority. The European Union fully supports the process that is taking place in the United Nations. Kosovo, together with Serbia and the entire region are in need of a sustainable solution,” Solana said.
