According to Ponoš, this will enable Serbian army officers to attend U.S. military colleges, and build on interoperability with other states within NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PfP) program which Serbia joined last year.

“All of this is aimed at bringing the Serbian Army to professional standards regardless of the political implications of eventually joining NATO or staying out of the alliance,” Ponoš said.

He added that Pace will visit Serbia “in the foreseeable future”, as well as that a U.S. defense cooperation office will be operational in Belgrade.

Ponoš also told journalists the meeting agreed on the need to utilize Serbia’s PfP membership to establish regular bilateral military consultations on the highest level.

The Serbian Chief of the General Staff is scheduled to hold meetings at the U.S. National Defense University and the State Department later Tuesday.
