“Mladić knows how to hide”

Lugonja expressed doubt that Mladić was being aided by any institution, assuming that “Mladić knows very well how to hide on his own”.

According to the weekly NIN, Lugonja rejected claims that Mladić was surrounded by circles of protection, calling such assumptions “a downright folly” and wondered “why would Mladić need such protection”. “If Mladić put on weight and wore a disguise, he might as well be drinking coffee in Ruski Car restaurant in the heart of Belgrade, sitting at a table next to State Security operatives”, Lugonja said.

He confirmed that Mladić spent five or six days in September 2002 in his apartment. “He seemed completely normal, just as I’ve always known him to be”, Lugonja said adding that they were never close friends.

“He could have had more grays or gained a few kilos. Since I didn’t spend time in the apartment when Mladić was there, I can’t testify as to how he behaved, what he talked about or whether he was nervous. I’ve lost contact with him afterwards”, Lugonja was quoted as saying.
