BELGRADE The B92 Fund has launched its new humanitarian campaign - this time to help renovate a state-run institution known as Materinski Dom. This unique institution cares for socially vulnerable mothers and pregnant women. Campaign to renovate facility for endangered mothers It operates as part of the Center for the Protection of Infants, Children and Adolescents, located in Zvecanska Street in Belgrade. The institution's goal is provide assistance to women who are pregnant or have given birth but cannot count on the support of their families. "Materinski Dom is in many ways unique. Among other things, because it represents a kind of prevention against children ending up in orphanage protection," says Zoran Milacic, director of the Center for the Protection of Infants, Children and Youth. (B92) Victims of rape, domestic violence, minors who become pregnant and are left without family support, a mother who loses the support of her partner and cannot raise her child - all qualify for the help of the state when the country's social services send them here. The B92 Fund has been invited to help renovate the facilities that were built 40 years ago. (B92) "At this point it is, a high degree, in a state of ruin, and we've found that people will volunteer construction work, but we need a lot of equipment that is very important. This equipment is related to water and sewers, ceramic works, electrical works, plastering, painting and so on. All those who can help by donating equipment to the structure, which is very important for the social welfare system and those in need of such accommodation, are invited to contact us, the B92 Fund," said chairman of the fund's board, Veran Matic. He pointed out that this was "an incredible institution that encourages and enables motherhood as opposed to abortion." "80 percent of mothers who have come to Materinski Dom decided to have their baby and stay with the child, to keep the baby, which is an incredible figure," he added. (B92) "I was informed that the youngest girl that the institution has helped was 11 years old and that the pregnancy came as a result of incest. With the help of professionals and dedicated people from Materinski Dom it all worked out. The maternal love that I have seen here and the desire to keep their children really deserve help not only as much as we can, but it also needs strong commitment from this society, associated with solidarity, and the love of all of us," said Matic, who visited the facility. Anyone wishing to donate electrical material, laminate floors, plumbing material, paint, doors, ceramic tiles, sanitary ware, lighting, infant tubs, baby changing tables, furniture, bedding and the like, can contact the Fund at the following telephone number: 064 815 11 54. (B92) This is only state-managed "safe house" in Belgrade, dedicated to working on the education and socialization of the women who receive assistance, with some 80 percent returning to normal life. The section that houses the women and their children and is in need of renovation covers 350 square meters. The remaining 450 square meters include event hall, reception, and playrooms for the children. B92
