DAVOS British Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos to say he was "not turning his back on Europe". The statement came after Cameron on Wednesday announced a referendum on EU membership. Britain "not turning its back on Europe" - PM "This is not about turning our backs on Europe - quite the opposite. It's about how we make the case for a more competitive, open and flexible Europe, and secure the UK's place within it," Cameron was quoted as saying by the AFP. Cameron addressed his country's parliament yesterday to say a referendum would be called by the end of 2017, unless EU leaders supported his plans to renegotiate Britain's membership and exempt it from most rules that are in place for other member-states. The British prime minister argued that European countries had their own history, traditions and institutions, and wished to maintain their sovereignty and ability to make their own decisions. Cameron rejected any call for greater political union, saying: "A centralized political union? Not for me, not for Britain." David Cameron is seen on Wednesday in London (Beta/AP) AFP Tanjug
