Minister: No positive opinion for Serbian judiciary
Serbia's Justice Minister Nikola Selaković said Monday after talks with top EC officials that the Serbian judiciary would not get a positive rating from the EC.

BELGRADE Serbia's Justice Minister Nikola Selakovic said Monday after talks with top EC officials that the Serbian judiciary would not get a positive rating from the EC. He added that the starting date for accession talks depended on Serbia. Minister: No positive opinion for Serbian judiciary "Unfortunately, right now I cannot say that we will get a positive opinion, because they are looking at the period which was 99 percent filled by activities of the previous government," Selakovic said after meeting with EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule and Director General Stefano Sannino. “The EC will publish its annual report of the progress made by candidate countries in early October, and the work of the new government will not be assessed for another year,” said the minnister. He was also reluctant to say Serbia would get a starting date for accession talks with the EU in the near future. "We have been told that the date depends on our activities at the Ministry of Justice," Selakovic told reporters. Selakovic, Fule and Sannino discussed the state of the Serbian justice system at length. "I informed them about the difficult situation the judiciary was in and told them about the problems the Ministry needed to face in the coming period," said the Serbian minister, who mentioned the large number of unresolved old cases as an example. They also discussed the fight against crime and corruption, and efforts to establish a truly independent judiciary, in which the EU is fully ready to assist Serbia, according to the minister.
