Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic says that it is not good to violate the Interim Trade Agreement in a year when Serbia is hoping to receive the EU candidate status. “We will work with our European partners in days to come in order to find an acceptable solution,“ he told B92. “We shouldn’t violate agreements with EU” The deputy prime minister said that representatives of the European Commission and the Serbian government would at a meeting on March 22 in Brussels find a solution for dual excise tax on oil derivates which had been introduced in Serbia last Serbia. He pointed out that Committee for Monitoring of the Implementation of the Interim Trade Agreement Co-Chairman Pierre Mirel had said that the EC believed that changes to the Excise Tax Law, which were adopted on December 29, 2010, violated two articles of the Interim Trade Agreement. The deputy prime minister added that Mirel also said that the EC thought that the adopted excise taxes violated an article of the Energy Community of the South East Europe as well. He said that Serbia and the EC would find a common, acceptable solution on March 22. “This isn't a thing that never happens. Many other countries have moments in their relations with the EU when both sides think that the trade agreement has been violated,“ Djelic stressed. According to the changes to the Excise Tax Law , the excise taxes on imported fuel are higher than the ones on the fuel produced by the Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS). The EU has rejected Serbia's claim that dual excise taxes are protecting domestic production. Djelic has already announced that the government will amend the law after the EC has given its opinion.
