German ambassador to Belgrade Wolfram Maas said that the speed of Belgrade’s European integration depends on the Serbian government. He told daily Blic that Germany has always encouraged Serbia to move step by step down that road, adding that the quick implementation of reforms in Serbia is the best way to speed up integrations, because the reforms are in the best interest of the citizens, regardless of EU association. "Every step towards EU important" Maas said that Germany’s policy is that all conditions must be met in order for an enlargement of the EU to occur, adding that both the candidate and the EU must meet the necessary conditions in order for that to happen. He added that European has “done its homework” with the adoption of the Lisbon Agreement. “However, the conditions for entering the EU, besides the completion of the Copenhagen criteria and the obligations from the SAA which Serbia has undertaken, for every candidate, include regional cooperation and good neighborly relations as well. This goes for Kosovo as well,” Maas said. He said that economic cooperation between Serbia and Germany made progress in 2009, even if it was a year of crisis. Maas reminded that many German companies invest in Serbia and that the bilateral aid coming from Germany to Serbia has reached a record level.
