The draft statute gives Vojvodina the highest level of autonomy provided by the Constitution, the provincial assembly president says. But Sandor Egeresi also stated that changes to the Constitution should be made by the end of this government’s mandate. Vojvodina assembly speaker on statute The draft statute and accompanying documents are currently debated in parliament. "Vojvodina has reached the maximum level of autonomy provided by the Constitution of Serbia, but I do not think that our Constitution is harmonized enough with the European principles, and I support President Tadic’s earlier announcement that some changes should be made by the end of this government’s term," he told Belgrade daily Vecernje novosti. Egeresi said he was glad the draft statute and laws were "finally before the Serbian parliament after a year of waiting", but expressed disappointment at the debate, which according to him "looked more like bickering than a serious analysis of Vojvodina’s two highest legal acts". If the drafts are adopted by the end of November their application would start on January 1, he explained. “It will be a long process and I will be happy if it ended during the next two years, by the end of my mandate. But nobody should be fooled to think that better life in Vojvodina will come right away – a lot of time will pass before we start to see improvements,” said Egeresi.
