Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic says that parliament will debate the Vojvodina Statute during the spring session in March. “That issue can formally be debated in parliament beginning on March 1, when the regular sessions begin,” Djukic-Dejanovic told reporters after a meeting with Vojvodina Assembly Speaker Sandor Egeresi. Speaker: Statute debate in March She added that this issue could not technically be put on the agenda of an extraordinary parliamentary session, because it had been submitted to parliament for adoption under regular procedure and included the adoption of a law on the province’s authorities. “I am convinced that this delicate, important job, which means democratization, regionalization and Europeanization for the country, will be finished within a reasonable time frame,” she said. Djukic-Dejanovic and Egeresi both said that they were convinced that the Statute would be approved by the national parliament. Asked about the calls from several ruling party officials to amend certain provisions within the Statute, Djukic-Dejanovic said that any changes should have been rendered during the debate in the Vojvodina Assembly. “It is never too late to change the text if it needs to be fixed. The Vojvodina Statute cannot be a topic of daily political affirmation for everyone. The Vojvodina Statute is needed by Vojvodina and it must be in accordance with the Serbian Constitution,” she said. Egeresi believes that the Statute is in accordance with the Constitution and that any attempt to deny this is purely politically motivated. He said that getting the Statute on the parliamentary agenda would help promote a democratic debate and dialogue with the media and citizens in order to get them better acquainted with the finer points of the Statute, which is a pillar of democracy for Serbia and Vojvodina. Egeresi added that the Statute would confirm Serbia’s European regionalization and strengthen the European integration process. Slavica Djukic Dejanovic (FoNet, archive)
