Air pollutants in Pančevo reached high levels of concentration yesterday, but have receded since midnight.

New wave of air pollution in Pančevo
After midnight, the level dropped down to 99.9 micrograms, and the concentration of total reduced sulphur compounds dropped from 80.7 to 37.8 micrograms, which was still very high.The levels of powdery substances have dropped down to 154 mcg from the original 914 micrograms measured at 8 PM.
NIS-refineries manager Nikola Garić said last night that the Pančevo oil refinery had stopped all activities that could increase benzene air levels.
Srđan Miković says that boundary benzene levels were overstepped twice last night. The levels shot up from 90.7 mcg/m³, measured at 9 PM, to 117.56 mcg/m³ at 11PM. “I do not want to disturb the citizens, but my duty is to keep them informed, no matter where the pollution originates from”, he added. Miković speculated that the pollution came from industrial facilities.
Assistant Minister of Science and Environmental protection Miroslav Nikčević said that sounding the sirens and disturbing the citizens had been unnecessary. He added that the pollution was caused by unfavourable weather conditions and not by chemical factories in Pančevo, supervised by the Serbian Ecological Inspection.
However, Miković noted that the assistant minister had tried to minimize his liability on the matter.
At 6 PM last night, the air pollution measuring system detected powdery substances, reduced sulphur and benzene compounds, and the level of carbon monoxide was 15.7 mcg/m³ while the permitted maximum is 10 mcg/m³. At the same time, the town was covered with thick fog, adverse doors, while citizens reported respiratory problems. The fog cleared up after 7 PM.
The Hydro-meteorological Service of Serbia warned municipal bodies yesterday of upcoming adverse weather conditions which could contribute to higher pollution levels.
