Regional countries sign MoU on border protection

Stefanovic said that over 120,000 migrants have been registered in Serbia in the first eight months of this year, and once again underlined that Serbia expects concrete financial aid and also other forms of assistance "so as to be able to receive these people in a humane manner."

The minister stressed that Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, and Hungary are "exclusively transit countries" - and that it is "not realistic to expect them to take on the greatest burden of migrations."

Also on Friday, the Serbian government announced on its website that representatives of interior ministries of Serbia, Hungary, Austria, and Macedonia signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation in Ohrid in the field of border protection, which envisages joint organization of mixed patrols and investigative teams of the signatories' police forces.

The document was signed by Nebojsa Stefanovic, his Macedonian counterpart Mitko Cavkov, Federal Minister for the Interior of Austria Johanna Mikl-Leitner and Deputy Secretary of State for EU and International Relations at the Ministry of the Interior of Hungary Krizstina Berta.

As provided in the memorandum, joint mixed patrols will be deployed on the Serbian-Hungarian, Serbian-Macedonian and Macedonian-Greek border, and the goal is to counter human smuggling and illegal crossing of state borders.

Stefanovic said after signing that the document is a small but clear step that shows that the signatory countries want to do everything they can to become part of a global and purposeful solutions to the dramatic increase in the number of refugees.

He also pointed out that it is essential that the European Union comes up with a comprehensive and complete solution.
