More than 200 dead in Turkish mine disaster

At least 232 miners were was killed and hundreds of others trapped underground after an explosion at a coal mine in the province of Manisa, western Turkey.

More than 200 dead in Turkish mine disaster

Yildiz told reporters that a team of 400 people was involved in the rescue efforts and that the cause of death of the victims was poisoning with toxic gases.

Firefighters tried to inject fresh air through an opening in the mine to help those who remain trapped about two kilometers below the surface, and four kilometers from the entrance.

The accident that occurred on Tuesday leaving 787 miners unable to reach the surface. It is assumed that an explosion occurred due to a faulty electric transformer.

Hundreds of people, mostly relatives of the miners gathered around the scene of the explosion. The company that operates the mine, Soma Komur, said that "highest safety measures were in place."

"Unfortunately, some of our workers have lost their lives in this tragic incident," a statement said.

The last time safety was checked at the mine was on March 17 and was found to be in accordance with regulations.

However, miner Oktay Berrin was quoted as saying by AFP that workers were not protected underground.

"There is no security in this mine. The unions are just puppets and our management only cares about money."

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan canceled his trip to Albania and would travel to the scene during the day.

Erdogan offered his condolences to the families of the victims and expressed hope that the trapped miners would be rescued.
