Chinese leader: Russia can help find solution

Chinese President Xi Jinping told Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that he believes Russia can help in finding a political resolution to the Ukraine crisis.

Chinese leader: Russia can help find solution

"The situation in Ukraine, which seems to be accidental, has the elements of the inevitable," the Chinese leader was also quoted as saying.

"China believes that Russia can coordinate with other parties to push for the political settlement of the issue so as to safeguard regional and world peace and stability," Xi told Putin, according to the ministry's statement.

The two presidents expressed hope that "the steps taken by the Russian leadership will allow for the reduction of tension and provide for the security of Russian-speaking citizens living in Crimea and the eastern regions of Ukraine," Reuters quoted the statement.

China supports the proposals and mediation efforts of the international community that are conducive to reduction of tension, Xi also said.

The Kremlin said Putin and Xi "hold close views on Ukraine."
