CARACAS Venezuelan citizens will today vote in a presidential election to choose between Acting President Nicolas Maduro and opposition candidate Henrique Capriles. Mutual accusations and insults marked the short election campaign after Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez died of cancer on March 5. Venezuelans to choose Chavez successor Maduro, chosen by Chavez as his successor, is in a significant lead according to recent polls. He promised to continue the socialist revolution that has provided education, health protection and food to the poor thanks to oil production. Maduro’s campaign has focused on his close relationship to Chavez who managed to reduce poverty but left the country in great economic problems. Capriles on the other hand believes the country needs changes. He promised to keep Chavez’s social programs but that he would at the same time introduce policies for business development modeled after Brazil. 40-year-old Capriles, who would be the youngest Venezuelan president if he won the elections, managed to unite the otherwise divided opposition just like ahead of the presidential election on October 7, 2012 when he narrowly lost to Chavez.
