Novi Sad: Neighbor's dogs kill elderly man in his yard

Bursac said that they received a call from the police a little before 7 a.m. today about a canine attack with a deadly outcome.

Bursac said that "as far as he was aware" the dogs have an owner - a man who is currently in Germany, while the dogs were "staying in the yard, cared for by the owner's wife."

"According to her, the dogs chased a cat that escaped through the fence to a neighbor's yard. The dogs jumped across the fence and then attacked and killed the neighbor who came outside to defend the cat," said Bursac.

He also "stressed that each dog must have a responsible owner, and that is all that matters, rather than their breed."

The media reported earlier that the dogs in question are pit bulls.

When asked by reporters what legal repercussions there may be for the owner, Bursac said he learned the case will be treated as manslaughter.

In a statement issued later in the day, the Interior Ministry (MUP) identified the woman who was responsible for the dogs as 29-year-old I.M., adding that she was arrested on suspicion of committing a grave act against general safety. She will be held in police custody for up to 48 hours.
