Members of an association of farmers today protested against the new measures introduced by the government by blocking roads on several locations. The farmers announced they would take their tractors to the Ministry of Agriculture and government buildings in Belgrade, but said later in the day that police prevented them from reaching Belgrade. Farmers block several roads in protest Instead, they set up road blocks near the town of Pancevo, northeast of Belgrade, while another group was on its way from Kragujevac in central Serbia. The association, which calls itself "100 P Plus", announced that the government went back on its promise made last year, and instead of increasing, decided to cut the already meager budget funds set aside for agriculture. Strong regular police and Gendarmerie forces were sent to the outskirts of Pancevo by the authorities, but there have been no reports of incidents thus far. The government is due to adopt a decision this week on subsidies for registered farming households, which would allow payment of the same per-year figure as last year, but would limit the maximum size of subsidized land to ten hectares. In 2010, this limit was 100 hectares. 74,000 farming households received RSD 14,000 per hectare from the state budget. The message put up by the farmers reads, 'We want subsidies' (Beta)
