The opening ceremony of the 25th World Student Games (Summer Universiade) is due to get under way in the Belgrade Arena at 20:00 CET this evening. The Games, which will run from July 1-12, will bring together 8,500 athletes from 144 countries. World Student Games set to begin The chairman of the World Student Games Organizational Committee, Bozidar Djelic, said that it was a real feat for Serbia to have organized this competition during these times of financial woe. “I must say, on behalf of the organizational committee, that we must thank the citizens of Serbia first and foremost, who showed a dose of understanding in this difficult year Thanks to them, we weren’t put in a position where we had to disgrace ourselves by calling the whole thing off. I don’t need to remind you that Belgrade already cancelled this event once in the 1980s.” Djelic said. “This is something that will greatly strengthen the credibility of our country, and it will be seen that Serbia is a country that can be counted on. This will give us a strong argument for hosting other future events, both in sport and other fields too,” he said. President of the International University Sports Federation George Killian said that he expected the World Student Games in Belgrade to be exceptional. The opening ceremony will include a procession of some 7,000 athletes and volunteers from 143 countries, who will set off from the Holiday Inn Hotel at 17:00 CET.
