Science Minister and deputy PM Bozidar Djelic presented a strategy which calls for an increase in investments in science to up to one pct. of the GDP. The 2009-2014 science-technology development strategy, dubbed Focus and Partnership, will call for increased investments in science by one percent of the GDP and investments in infrastructure of EUR 300mn. Djelic: More money for science “The future of Serbian science is European, just as the future of Serbia,” Djelic said while presenting the strategy at the Hyatt Hotel in Belgrade this Monday. He added that the EU will be a dominant partner in realizing the program. He added that negotiations with the European Investment Bank are going well, and that Serbia will look to secure a very favorable loan of EUR 150mn for investing in the science infrastructure. Djelic added that science has "progressed considerably over the last several years", but that the government is still not satisfied with the current situation. “We have a vision that at least half of our scientific capacities will be employed in private companies in the next five to ten years,” Djelic said. He said that the priority of the programs will be investments in biomedicine, new materials, environmental protection, the development of information technology, and energy efficiency. Djelic added that European Commissioner for Science and Research Janez Potocnik, currently on a visit to Belgrade, ensured that Serbia would participate in a special offer for projects within the Balkans. The realization of these projects will begin in late July, and finish in October. There will be a total budget of EUR 8mn allocated to this, and according to Djelic, Serbia has a chance to receive in between half and two-thirds of the funds.
