The National Council of the Roma welcomed the decision to introduce the Roma language in primary schools. The Ministry of Education decided to make the study of the Roma language an elective subject. Roma welcome introduction of language in schools President of the Committee for Education and Official Use of Languages Ibrahim Osmani told Tanjug that the ministry supported the Roma Council project and made a commitment to secure equal opportunities for access of minorities to education at all levels, in line with the European Framework Convention on Education. Education should provide equal opportunities to all, regardless of religion or ethnicity, to take part in public life and institutions, he said, noting that "the rights guaranteed to all human beings can be exercised only if they have equal access to education". Serbia is a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious community and support to minorities should constitute the starting point for democratic progress and for internal and international stability of the country, Osmani said.
