Skopje: Riots after amnesty is announced in wiretap affair

They afterwards moved to in front of the ruling VMRD-DPMNE party and in front of the government. The police were out in force in Skopje, said reports.

The affair in question concerns recordings of illegally wiretapped conversations published last year by the Macedonian opposition, which they dubbed "bombs." The opposition claimed that the tapes revealed the authorities' control over journalists, judges, public sector recruitment, as well as election manipulations.

Opposition SDSM party leader Zoran Zaev said last night that Ivanov's decision to pardon all participants was tantamount to "a coup d'etat" and that the rule of law "no longer existed" in Macedonia, demanding at the same time Ivanov's resignation.

"If he does not do it, he will lead the country to the brink," said Zaev.

A protest was also staged last night in front of the SDSM headquarters.

Speaking during the demonstrations in front of the VMRO-DPMNE late on Tuesday, Zaev also said he would not accept Ivanov's amnesty. According to the Plusinfo website, he asked that the decision, that concerns all ruling and opposition politicians involved in the affair, be rescinded.

Earlier on Tuesday, Ivanov announced that he "decided to put an end to this agony for Macedonia" and would sign a decree to halt all legal proceedings.
