The captain of a tourist vessel that sank on Saturday on Macedonia's Lake Ohrid, drowning 15 Bulgarians on board, has been arrested. 23-year-old Sotir Filevski was questioned by police, and afterwards remanded in custody for 30 days by a judge. His assistant was released. Macedonian boat captain detained 42 persons survived the accident, Macedonia's Interior Ministry said. The latest reports show that the boat, although legally registered to take on up to 45 passengers, had 57 people on board as it sank. Macedonia has declared this Sunday a day of mourning, while Bulgaria will do the same tomorrow. The government in Sofia has decided to help each family of the victims financially with some EUR 5,000. Meantime, Macedonia's Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska stated that the cause of the accident will be known once the investigation has been completed. "The Interior Ministry teams have been at the scene from the start. Members of a special unit left for the scene instantly, but unfortunately there was no possibility to save the 15 passengers who perished," the minister was quoted as saying. Transport Minister Mile Janakievski has offered his resignation to the government in the wake of the accident. The boat, the Ilinden, sank some 300 meters from the lake's shore. Eyewitnesses said that it took only minutes for it to break in two and capsize. Divers, policemen and tourists all took part in the rescue efforts.
