"A strong army and a growing economy are a good foundation for diplomatic solutions, and I'm not surprised that Belgrade turned to Russia for help in such a complex moment," Chepurin said.

Russia responded positively, and in a friendly manner, the ambassador added, referring to a deal struck earlier this week in Moscow to deliver warplanes, tanks, and combat vehicles to Serbia.

According to Chepurin, the result of Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic's trip turned out to be "a wonderful New Year gift to the Russia-Serbia relations, to Serbia's security."

Chepurin also "stressed it was of key importance for the negotiation's successful outcome that the prime minister was dealing with the matter."
