Government decides to shut down state news agency Tanjug

The decision provides that all employees will receive severance payments in accordance with the program for surplus employees in the privatization process.

The Privatization Agency has organized two attempts to privatize Tanjug this year and both were declared failed as there were no buyers.

State Secretary with the ministry Sasa Mirkovic confirmed the news for B92, and said that "two news agencies, Beta and FoNet, are enough for the Serbian market."

As for media reports that Tanjug is being shut down so that a new agency with the government could be launched, Mirkovic said these claims were unfounded.

As he explained, the existing law stipulates that the state must exit media ownership and in order to launch a new agency, the law would have to be changed. According to Mirkovic, there are no plans to do this.
