Serbia now has 100 registered political parties

The Green Party headquartered in Novi Sad is the one that recently became the country's 100th.

Its motto is, "Green ideas for a Green Serbia." Founder Goran Čabrad says that the membership is - "apolitical."

"To act, you must work through politics, but the topics we are most interested in are human rights. To make an impact you need to unite into a political party," he explained.

According to its statute, the Green Party is a minority party - one of 70 currently registered in Serbia. There are another 30 parties representing general interests, i.e. interests of all citizens.

1,000 signatures are need to support the registering of a party representing minorities, while regular ones require 10,000 signatures.

Although many rely on money from the state budget as backbone of their funding, Serbians are not paying for all 100 parties.

"You cannot get money from the budget if you do not win one percent of the vote. Only major relevant parties get money," CeSID's Đorđe Vuković explained.

The Law on Political Parties states that unless a party wins at least one seat in parliament during a period of eight years, it is to be removed from the register.
