DSS official says party will be "principled opposition"

The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) will be principled opposition to the new government in the Serbian parliament, said spokesman Petar Petković.

The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) will be principled opposition to the new government in the Serbian parliament, said spokesman Petar Petkovic. He also announced that DSS leader and former PM Vojislav Kostunica and top officials Aleksandar Popovic and Dragan Jocic will not serve as MPs in the new parliament. The DSS has 21 MPs in the Serbian parliament, and Petkovic explained that Kostunica, Jocic and Popovic will be succeeded by MPs who follow them on the party's electoral list - Aleksandar Pejcic, Dejan Mihajlov and Gorica Gajic. Petkovic underlined that the party did not take part in talks on forming the government and added that while in parliament, the DSS will observe the government's work, be its principled opposition and advocate the idea of Serbia's political neutrality. He also pointed to the party's stance that the "EU has no alternative" policy led Serbia to its collapse and that the former government's concessions related to the EU integration were devastating for the country, and said that Serbia should now turn to its own interests and establish new relations with the EU, primarily the economic ones. One of the reasons for that is the deep crisis in the EU, which Petkovic says is "a sinking ship."
