The answers are currently being checked and translated, said the government. Serbia is to hand the answers to the Commission on Jan. 31, 2011. Government answers EC questionnaire Since Serbia submitted its application for EU membership on Dec. 22, 2009 and the European Commission decided on Oct. 25, 2010 to forward the application to other EU bodies, the next step is the evaluation of whether Serbia has met the political and economic criteria for membership and whether it is capable of taking on membership-related obligations. Based on the answers to the Questionnaire, the Commission will issue an Opinion (Avis) on whether the future candidate is ready for the status and the next stage -- defining an approximate date for accession talks, on which the EU member states decide by consensus. The Questionnaire, which contains 2,483 questions and sub-questions, divided into six annexes and 33 chapters, was handed to Serbian government officials by EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule on Nov. 24, 2010. The Commission will analyze the answers and, if necessary, send additional questions and expert missions. The European Commission is expected to start putting together the Avis at the beginning of this summer and Serbia can gain candidate status no sooner than December 2011.
