Opposition DSS leader Vojislav Kostunica was not invited to attend the opening of the renovated Avala Tower. Work on the restoration of the television transmitter began in 2005, at which time Kostunica was prime minister. The transmitter and the surrounding structures were destroyed in NATO's attacks on Serbia in 1999. Kostunica snubbed in tower ceremony Kostunica was at the opening of work on the restorations on June 24, 2005. The ceremony for unveiling the repaired tower is scheduled for April 21, and it will be attended by senior government officials. The restoration of the Belgrade landmark was funded by the government and through donations. Kostunica said that Serbia has entered an intolerable crisis because of the government’s irresponsible and destructive policies, adding that the economy has been ruined, and that people are poor and hopeless, with low morale. He added that the crisis came above all because there was no statehood policy – something that “Karadjordje (leader of the Serbian uprising) recognized as long as two centuries ago”. Speaking at the final DSS convention before local elections in Arandjelovac on April 25, Kostunica said that as far as democracy in Serbia is concerned, “with few exceptions, a media-led one-minded approach is being led, in the same way that the institution which is expected to be the mirror of freedom in a country, parliament, is everything but.” The opposition leader and PM for two terms in the post-Milosevic Serbia said that the Serbian parliament has been turned into a voting machine, adding that all restrictions have been used to limit MPs’ freedoms, and stop the representatives of the people from addressing the nation.
