An Islamic Community in Serbia meeting yesterday backed mufti Moamer Zukorlic, sacked by a rival organization. Zukorlic was out of the country earlier this week when imams loyal to Belgrade mufti Hamdija Jusufspahic held a gathering of their own to replace him with Adem Zilkic. Split deepens within Islamic community The Novi Pazar assembly, however, annulled this decision, and called on what it sees as rebel imams to "repent". Several thousand Muslim worshippers gathered around the Meshihat building as the meeting took place. The assembly called on those who sought to replace Zukorlic to "repent in writing by October 12, and face no consequences." Zukorlic then addressed the gathering outside the Meshihat, and told them that the appointment of a new reis, od Islamic chief, was "a wide conspiracy by state organs, some politicians and traitors within the Islamic community." "The behavior of Belgrade is hypocritical and shameful. The law stipulates that there can only be one Islamic community, and they are trying to create a dozen," Zukorlic lashed out. Worshippers who gathered earlier in the day communicated with each other via text messages and threatened to, "if need be, defend the mufti's status." A group sent by Zukorlic yesterday to sack local imams in Prijepolje was involved in an incident, after which police made arrests and confiscated firearms. The Sandzak region remains unstable with deep political divide within Muslim parties, but also occurrence of extreme Islamic movements, such as Wahhabism.
