EU pledges support to Serbia

“The EU Presidency welcomes the fact that prime minister Vojislav Koštunica set the co-operation with the Hague Tribunal as one of the new government’s five top priorities,” the statement said.

“Concrete and efficient measures undertaken in that direction would allow the EU to resume stabilization and association talks with Serbia without any hesitation,” the German Foreign Ministry says.

Apart form the statement, German Chancellor Angela Merkel dispatched separate greeting notes to Vojislav Koštunica and president Boris Tadić, congratulating them personally on the successful formation of the new democratic government.

“It is now up to Your government to bring Serbia near the European Union by implementing fresh reforms and achieving essential co-operation with the Hague Tribunal. In that sense you can count on our full support,” Merkel said.

Portugal backs Serbia EU integration

Portuguese Foreign Minister Luís Filipe Marques Amado has arrived in Belgrade amid preparations for approaching Portuguese EU presidency.

Amado whose country will take over the rotating EU presidency form Germany on July 1 stressed in a meeting with Serbian prime minister Vojislav Koštunica that Portugal fully supported Serbia in its continuation of European integration.

Amado underscored that Serbia was very important for stability in the region and that Portugal, during its EU chairmanship, would pay special attention to Serbia as such.

Koštunica explained how Serbia was clearly in favor of European integration and that it would continue wit the activities that would allow for the signing of  the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA).
