Germany opposes unilateral declarations

Upon the arrival by a military helicopter, Jung stood on top of the ruins of an ancient castle overlooking the southern town of Prizren, where about 2,300 German peacekeepers are stationed.

Some 600 German soldiers, part of NATO's reserve forces, were deployed last month in Kosovo for training.

He was briefed by German military officers at an observation point based in a destroyed Serbian Orthodox chapel and walked through the ruins of a Serbian neighborhood destroyed in 2004 ethnic riots when ethnic Albanian mobs attacked the Serb minority.

Jung said German peacekeepers were committed to maintain security in Kosovo as it awaits the decision on the final status.

"I appeal to people to be patient and wait for the decision," Jung said.

"We are trying to get a solution at the Security Council and this we would consider as the best solution. A unilateral declaration of independence would be a mistake for the moment, so let's wait to see what solution will be reached at the Security Council."

Jung will today travel to Priština for talks with Kosovo's Prime Minister Agim Ceku and President Fatmir Sejdiu.
