The Hague Tribunal says that a new indictment against Radovan Karadzic will be issued on October 19 and that his trial will begin on October 26. Under yesterday’s ruling by the Tribunal appeals chamber, the Karadzic trial will begin a week after the prosecution files the new indictment, which was shortened slightly in order to speed up the trial. Karadzic case could begin on Oct. 26 Prosecution spokeswoman Olga Kavran said that there was no indication that the new indictment would be filed before October 19. Tribunal spokesperson Nerma Jelacic said that the trial chamber could set a date for the trial to continue before the deadline expires. The appeals chamber rejected Karadzic’s appeal against the decision to begin the trial and his claims that he has not had enough time to prepare. Karadzic warned the Tribunal in his appeal that he “will not participate in a show trial,” if the court does not give him enough time to prepare. The former President of the Republic of Srpska is accused of genocide and crimes against humanity, as well as taking international hostages during the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1992-1995.
