The Supreme Court yesterday began considering the appeals in the second trial for the murder of Željko Ražnatović.

The Supreme Court yesterday began considering the appeals in the second trial for the murder of Zeljko Raznatovic. The matter concerns motions from both the prosecution and defense relating to the murder of Raznatovic, aka Arkan, and two of his friends in 2000. Supreme Court on Arkan verdicts Aside from the two main accused - Dobrosav Gavric and Milan Djurisic, who both disappeared just before the second verdict was to be delivered, and for whom arrest warrants have been issued – all the other defendants appeared, including Dragan Nikolic, aka Gagi, who is still in custody. In sentencing at the Belgrade District Court, it was stated that Gavric, Djurisic and Nikolic had, according to their plan, driven to the Intercontinental Hotel and murdered the three people, also injuring a female passer-by. Gavric approached the three friends who were sitting in a booth from behind, and first shot Raznatovic three times with his revolver, then Milenko Mandic and Dragan Garic, while Djurisic and Nikolic gave him cover. During their escape from the hotel, Raznatovic’s bodyguard Zvonko Mateovic shot and wounded Gavric. For the murders of Raznatovic, Mandic, and Garic, Gavric was sentenced to 30 years for firing the fatal shots. Djurisic and Nikolic were also convicted of murder and complicity, while Dejan Pitulic, Vujadin Krstic and Stojan Rankovic were sentenced to six years behind bars for aiding and abetting. Djordje Grubacic and Milomir Vasiljevic received sentences of nine and three years respectively. The case went to the Supreme Court a second time after the original hearing was abandoned due to a lack of evidence. In October 2001, the District Court sentenced Gavric – at the time, a policeman on sick leave – to 20 years, and Djurisic and Nikolic to 15. Dejan Pitulic, Vujadin Krstic, Djordje Grubacic and Stojan Rankovic were each sentenced to three years for aiding and abetting the fugitives after the murder. Milomir Vasiljevic was given an eight month sentence, together with a parallel suspended sentence of three years, while Zoran Nikolic, aka Iron, died in custody before the verdicts were delivered. Aside from the two main accused - Dobrosav Gavrić and Milan Đurišić, who both disappeared just before the second verdict was to be delivered, and for whom arrest warrants have been issued – all the other defendants appeared, including Dragan Nikolić, aka Gagi, who is still in custody.
