"There has been some back-and-forth with ministers about the number of employees. Only the Ministry of Finance, which is still trying to increase the number of employees, is a real problem. I had to complain about them, but I think we will agree on no increase," Udovicki said, speaking about the planned layoffs in the public sector.

Although she persisted her claim there was "no final figure " and that "it would be published if it existed," when reporters insisted, Udovicki said "preparations will start for the dismissal of approximately two-thirds of the 9,000 surplus employees in the state administration, and as many out of the 55,000 employed locally."

The minister was addressing the Regional Investment Summit NIN Focus, whose media partner is Tanjug, when she said the number of layoffs - once a final decision has been made - will be posted on the government website, "along with a competition (to select) an organization that will provide additional explanations."

"You don't believe me, and we no longer have the strength to be explaining it. I am announcing that I'm going to announce a competition for an agency that will deal with explaining this information," said Udovicki.
