The pre-qualification tender for expressing interest in the privatization of pharmaceutical company Galenika begins on December 15.

The pre-qualification tender for expressing interest in the privatization of pharmaceutical company Galenika begins on December 15. Economy and Regional Development Minister Mladjan Dinkic said that a two-phase tender is panned for the Zemun-based company, the first to determine interest from potential buyers, who will have to be willing to offer at least EUR 200mn for 100 percent of the company’s capital. The final tender is not expected before January 2010, which is when a pharmaceutical production plant worth EUR 60mn is expected to be completed. Dinkic said that if the right offers are not received, there will be no tender. Galenika is a Serbian brand with a 65-year tradition and is the cornerstone of the country's pharmaceutical industry, along with Vrsac-based Hemofarm. Galenika Director Nenad Ognjenovic recently said that if the company is privatized, he expects that it will “keep the same number of employees and increase productivity and exports.” He said that Galenika has begun large investments, including the aforementioned plant. The new facility will have a capacity for producing two million tablets and 100 million capsules per year, doubling current capacities. Galenika has also founded a company in Montenegro with mixed capital owned 75 percent by the Serbian government and 25 percent by the Montenegrin government. The company is a member of the group of companies, 15 percent of whose shares will be given out for free to citizens. If the changes to a law defining the distribution of free shares are adopted, the citizens will receive their shares before the privatization is completed, it has been announced.
