Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic has announced talks with the EU, International Monetary Fund and World Bank regarding financial assistance for Serbia. He said that the World Bank was weighing up whether to approve an additional loan of USD 300mn for Serbia. The government has also started talks with the European Commission for receiving EUR 400mn of macro-economic financial aid, while the scale of the additional loan from the IMF should be known in March. Djelic: New talks with EU, IMF, World Bank Djelic told a conference entitled “Possible Responses to the World Economic Crisis” in Belgrade that the World Bank was expected to approve the extra money for Serbia at its annual assembly in April. He explained that part of that loan, between USD 150-200mn, would go to the budget, stating that he had met with World Bank officials to discuss the arrangement recently in Davos. “Serbia currently has a package of aid from the World Bank of USD 600mn, USD 400mn of which is destined for Corridor 10,” Djelic said. As far as the IMF arrangement is concerned, the minister said new “coordinates for the program” would be agreed with IMF mission due to visit Belgrade in the middle of March. “We are looking at macro-economic information in order to determine how much money we lack for financing the country’s payment balance,” he said, adding that Serbia already had an arrangement with the IMF for EUR 402.5mn that could be extended. Djelic said that the government had reached an agreement with the European Commission in October 2008, after sealing the arrangement with the IMF, to begin talks on receiving financial support from that institution. The minister said that the deal for macroeconomic financial support from the European Union was expected to be operative in the last three months of the year.
