PM Mirko Cvetkovic says the delays in adopting the budget weren't caused by internal differences within the govt, but by the specific circumstances. Speaking to this week’s issue of weekly Vreme, Cvetkovic stressed that the it was vital for the government that the budget should be restrictive under the current circumstances and that it should contain the necessary measures for weathering the crisis. PM: No govt. rift over budget “The problem of conceiving an adequate economic policy for 2009 in the complex circumstances of a financial crisis required added time, and it was this that led to the partial delay—just as has been the case in other countries, probably for similar reasons,“ he said. The prime minister added that there were always differences of opinion when the budgetary “cake“ was laid out before everyone, but that the government had not suffered anything unusual or unexpected on this particluar occasion. “Just remember that there has always been a struggle over the budget in recent years, but it has always been overcome without any great political turmoil, and I believe that it will be the same on this occasion too,“ he said. According to Cvetkovic, all the government’s forecasts suggest that the budget projection and planned economic policy will be sustainable next year. He added that as no-one could accurately predict what would happen in the world economy in 2009, the government had prepared two scenarios: a better-case and worse-case scenario, depending on the economic situation. Cvetkovic said that he was hopeful that things would pan out according to the former. Mirko Cvetkovic (FoNet, archive)
