Kerry travels to Russia, has "frank discussions"

Kerry wrote on Twitter that he spoke with Putin about Iran, Syria, and Ukraine.

He added that it was important to maintain open channels of communication between the U.S. and Russia so that the two world powers can solve the most pressing world problems.

Kerry previously met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, with whom he laid wreaths at a monument to victims of the Second World War.

Lavrov said that Russia is ready to cooperate with the United States, but only on equal footing and without coercion.

A statement published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the attempts to exert pressure through sanctions on Russia can only lead to a dead end.

Putin's spokesman called the meeting between Kerry and Putin "a positive step," saying before the meeting that the Russian president wanted "extensive" talks.
