BELGRADE Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said on Monday that a possible referendum on the Brussels agreement must not delay the implementation of that deal. "If there are deadlines for a decision on the start of negotiations with the EU, we cannot be preparing the referendum for several months and at the same time not work on the implementation of the agreement," Dacic said. "Referendum must not delay deal implementation" According to him, if the referendum were to be called, the question "must not be a trap or be suggestive of the answer." Dacic added that it would "not make sense" to ask the citizens whether they were in favor of Kosovo remaining a part of Serbia - "and it is certainly impossible to accept to enable for several months of preparations for that referendum and in the meantime not implement the agreement." He once again asserted that the purpose of a referendum would be "to establish unity": "We have said that there was no problem to organize the referendum if it will help establish unity, and if that doesn't happen even afterwards, then the question is what the purpose of the referendum would be." Dacic voiced hope that at Tuesday's meeting, Kosovo Serb officials and Serbia's top officials will manage to find a common stance. The prime minister announced that Belgrade and Pristina could hold more EU-facilitated meetings. "I expect new meetings in May, I'm not really looking forward to it, but in contacts with Catherine Ashton it has been announced that there will probably be some new meetings," Dacic said, and added that "talks on numerous topics, such as property, return, protection of churches and cultural heritage, amnesty, energy and telecommunications, are all yet ahead."
