BELGRADE Serbian products with protected geographical origin will carry excise stamps and control numbers starting from September. This was announced by Branislav Raketic, an adviser in the Ministry of Agriculture Protected geographical indication for agricultural products During a meeting in the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce (PKB), Raketic said that every product made by registered producers will be marked by excise stamps and control numbers issued by the Institute for Manufacturing Banknotes and Coins. In agriculture, Serbia cannot be competitive in terms of volume of production, but it can in terms of quality of products, he said. According to City Secretary for Agriculture Aleksandar Jankovic, to protect competitiveness of a product, it is vital to create a brand. He said that right now, there is a large number of blueberry plantings in Mladenovac near Belgrade, and products made of these blueberries will be sold under their own brand. Jankovic said that the yield and quality of the blueberries will be known in three to four years. PKB Agriculture and Food Industry Association Secretary Miodrag Veseli said that Serbia has about 30 agricultural and food products and about 49 alcoholic beverages, including wine and plum brandy, with protected geographical indication labels. “We have to do more to increase competitiveness and to protect our producers,” said Veseli. City of Belgrade Secretary for the Economy Aleksandar Milosevic said he will do what he can to have funds allocated in the 2014 city budget for the certification of geographical indication of products. Some of the Serbian products with the protected geographical indication are Ariljska malina (raspberries from Arilje), Homoljski med (honey from Homolj), Pirotski cilim (Pirot carpet), and Rtanjski caj (Tea from Mt.
