BELGRADE Businessman Milan Beko is intelligent and knows how to watch his back so people around him are more likely do go down than he is, says Jorgovanka Tabakovic. “As far as I know Milan Beko, unless he has changed since we worked together in the government, he does not step on rotten boards. He usually protects himself well in his business. He is a skillful man, he did great business and he knows how to sneak through the loopholes in the law,” the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) governor told B92. "Beko knows how to use legal loopholes" Tabakovic, who was a minster in Mirko Marjanovic’s second government together with Beko, noted that those who “agreed to serve to him and interpret the laws for him” and those “he used as gloves” would go down instead of Beko. “This will not happen because someone is protecting him but because he is a highly intelligent man. He graduated from the Faculty of Transport but he seems to know the economy much better than many economists,” she explained. The central bank governor added that she believed that his questioning would give some explanations, but that she saw the questioning as a part of combat against monopoly and protection of competition. The questioning of Beko lasted for six hour on Tuesday at the Criminal Investigations Police Administration HQ in New Belgrade about the privatization of his company Port of Belgrade. B92 has learnt that the questioning should continue in the next several days. He told reporters after the questioning that he had tried to explain to the police and the prosecution “the reasons why an illusion about the alleged illegalities in the secondary privatization of the Port of Belgrade has been created for years”. Daily Blic writes that Beko was very “convincing at the hearing” and that he will “hardly meet the fate of Delta Holding owner Miroslav Miskovic and end up being arrested”. Milan Beko B92
