BELGRADE Serbian parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic has stated that a draft law on public procurement has been forwarded to parliament. He noted that the bill would enable savings and transparency in public procurement procedures. Draft law on public procurement arrives in parliament Stefanovic told a press conference that he hoped that the draft law would be on the agenda by the end of the year. According to him, it is expected that between EUR 600mn and EUR 1bn would be saved on the annual level and citizens will be able to control and have insight in the public procurement procedure. The speaker stressed that the new bill would allow the state to save funds that had so far been wasted on small procurements and that nontransparent contract annexes would be impossible. “The new law will introduce a transparent process in the public procurement and the citizens will see how the money is spent,” he explained. Stefanovic stressed that parliament had made one of the largest cuts, the biggest of all state institutions. He added that the parliamentary budget in 2012 was RSD 3.6bn while it would amount to EUR 2.2bn in 2013. “The budget of the Serbian parliament will be almost 40 percent lower and it is a way to show that saving is possible,” he said and stressed that every official needed to be aware of it and that they needed to spend the state funds responsibly.
