Parliament adopts changes to central bank law

BELGRADE The Serbian parliament adopted on Saturday amendments to the law on the National Bank of Serbia (NBS). There were 139 votes in favor of the amendments, 39 against and no abstained. Parliament adopts changes to central bank law The amendment that removed the article allowing the NBS to buy government securities on the secondary market was adopted. The amendments state that NBS officials, including the governor are appointed and discharged by the parliament, as well as that the governor, vice governors, heads of the new department for financial institution monitoring and members of the NBS Council will be appointed within 90 days of the law's entering into force. The law was put on the agenda under emergency procedure, and its entrance into force is planned for the day after it is published in the Official Gazette. The parliament will discuss potential governors next week, according to announcements, and current Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) whip and SNS deputy leader Jorgovanka Tabakovic was mentioned during the debate in the parliament on Saturday as a candidate for the position.
