Conference on South East Europe will begin in Berlin tonight. Representatives of the Serbian government will not attend the meeting.

Conference on South East Europe will begin in Berlin tonight. Representatives of the Serbian government will not attend the meeting. German and Austrian Foreign Ministers Guido Westerwelle and Michael Spindelegger will open the conference which will be attended by foreign ministers and other high officials of the countries of the region. Serbian reps won’t attend SE Europe conference Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, who announced earlier that he would take part in the conference, has canceled the trip due to obligations in Belgrade, his cabinet told Beta news agency. The conference titled “Prospects for South East Europe – Germany, Austria and U.S. in dialogue with leading politicians of the region” is organized by the Aspen Institute and supported by the U.S. Marshall Fund and German Foreign Ministry. The organizers point out that “stabilization of the Western Balkans and region’s integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures remains one of the main challenges of common European foreign and security policy”. Aside from Westerwelle and Spindelegger, foreign ministers of the countries of the region, German, Austrian and U.S. diplomats and German MPs will also attend the conference. According to the organizers, the goal of the meeting is “that high representatives of the countries of South East Europe, Germany, Austria and the U.S., in the spirit of trans-Atlantic dialogue, together discuss paths of reconciliation and European integration, as well as prospects for creation of a stable security structure in South East Europe”. A special part of the conference will be devoted to current economic problems and prospects of the Western Balkans. Businessmen from Serbia – Serbian Railways Management Board President Zoran Andjelkovic, Energoprojekt Director Vladimir Milanovic and Nektar Executive Director Bojan Radun, will participate in this part of the conference. The organizers claim that “economic development does not only contribute to well-being but also to political stability and therefore it helps bring the region closer to the EU”.

The conference titled “Prospects for South East Europe – Germany, Austria and U.S. in dialogue with leading politicians of the region” is organized by the Aspen Institute and supported by the U.S. Marshall Fund and German Foreign Ministry.
