The Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) called on Serbs to boycott the early parliamentary elections scheduled by the Pristina institutions for February 13, 2011. The vote represents a violation of UN SC Resolution 1244 and the Constitution of Serbia, the party announced in Belgrade today. Opposition party tells Serbs to boycott Kosovo elections At a press conference, DSS spokesperson Petar Petkovic stressed that the only legitimate elections would be those called by Serbia. He criticized the ruling Democratic Party (DS) for “calling Serbs to go to the polls for a fake country Kosovo” and assessed that such an act represents “a systematical acknowledgement of independence of the southern Serbian province,” and shows how fatal the policy claiming that Serbia has no alternative for the EU can be. He said that the current government is making contradictory statements, at first saying that it will never acknowledge Kosovo-Metohija independence, and then calling on Serbs to come to the elections and thus helping the separatist institutions. Head of the DS Political Council Dragoljub Micunovic told the Novi Sad daily Dnevnik (Daily) that the boycotting policy has thus far yielded no results whatsoever and that a voice of Kosovo Serbs needs to be heard, by creating conditions that would make them part of vital decision-making processes in Pristina. He said that the Serbian government has so far been taking the attitude that Kosovo Serbs should restrain from voting because Serbia does not recognize the province's institutions, but added, however, that that Kosovo Serbs have not gained anything by this and have only stayed in ghetto, deprived of any legal protection. “I do not know whether the Serbian government will now adopt any new attitude and what it would be like, but I hope that the reasons behind a stand would be rational, rather than emotional,” Micunovic underlined.
