Ruecker: Local elections “unacceptable”

UNMIK Chief Joachim Ruecker says that holding Serbian local elections on May 11 in Kosovo would be “unacceptable.” He said that the goal of these elections was to create “parallel, illegal and illegitimate Serbian structures” in Kosovo. Ruecker added that holding local Serbian elections in Kosovo violated UN Security Council Resolution 1244, and that the results of the election would not be valid. Stating that UNMIK had faced challenges in northern Kosovo, where a large Serb population lives, Ruecker said that he had spoken with Kosovo Serb officials and Belgrade, but that the talks had not yielded any results.
