Re-elected President Boris Tadic says that Serbia showed its great potential to Europe in yesterday’s elections. “We won together. We showed the democratic potential of Serbia, we showed this to many European countries as well. Serbia is a brilliant democratic country, and has a great future." Tadic: Now is time for hard work "However, it is not a time for celebration, but hard work. We need to secure stability and a European vision for all ethnic communities and the Serbian people,” Tadic said at his Democratic Party headquarters. After declaring victory in yesterday’s election, Tadic congratulated his opponent Tomislav Nikolic of the Serb Radical Party (SRS), and said that he would meet with him soon, because he deserved respect on the basis of the number of votes he received. “The basis after the elections is for Serbia to unite and to work together on improving citizens’ lives,” Tadic said. He thanked G17 Plus leader Mladjan Dinkic, Sandzak Democratic Party chief Rasim Ljajic, Hungarian Coalition leader Istvan Pastor and the parties of Serbia’s ethnic communities for supporting him in the elections. He then joined his supporters who gathered last night just after 10:00 CET in the center of Belgrade and celebrated victory to the sound of brass bands, while driving around the city center with party flags hanging out their car windows. “I want to thank all the people that have believed in the idea of a Serbia that can win over Europe over the past decades,” Tadic said. He also assured Serbian citizens in Kosovo that they would never be betrayed. “We do not wish anyone harm, but we are asking for Serbia and its people to be respected,” Tadic said. He called on all citizens to congratulate Nikolic on his election results, adding that he wanted Serbia to be for everyone, including those who had supported the SRS candidate at the election. The president said that, after his victory, there was a good chance that the big problems of criminal and corruption could be solved, adding that local elections would be called soon. “We want a European, democratic Serbia that believes in its potential,” Tadic said, adding that Serbia would cooperate with the EU in order to become a member. Tadic's new 5-year mandate will see him in the role, which according to the Serbian constitution, gives him the authority to approve laws, and return legislation to parliament. Together with the prime minister and parliament speaker, he can declare a state of emergency and a state of war, but only if the parliament cannot convene. Tadic is also the supreme commander of Serbia's armed forces. As he takes his oath, likely on Feb. 15, Tadic will declare that he "will devote all his efforts to preserve the sovereignty and integrity of Serbia's territory, including Kosovo as its constituent part."
